Getting started

The window, explained

The studio is a single window. Nothing floats, nothing hides behind something else, and there is no panel arrangement to learn or lose. This article names the five areas and says what each is for.

The timeline

The centre of the window and of the work. Time runs left to right, channels stack downward, and every block you see is a clip you can move.

The channel list

At the side. A row for every channel, with its name, colour and the three controls you need while playing: mute, solo and record.

The transport bar

At the top. Play, stop, record, position, tempo and metronome. These are the only controls that never change, whatever you do.

The sound browser

At the side, closed by default. Sounds, loops, instruments and effects in one list with one search box.

The mixer

At the bottom, opens with a keystroke. A fader for every channel and the effects on it — the same channels you see above, from another angle.
